Celebrating Our 2023 Grads
June has been a banner month at JCCA. From our magical, record-setting Tree benefit, to our Juneteenth Jubilee and Pride parades, the early summer has been filled to brim with festivity and celebration. To top it off, the last two weeks have seen graduation ceremonies...
Arches
Arches, a collaboration with the NYC Department of Probation, is a transformative mentorship program for young adults on probation. Based in the Bronx, our program employs “credible messengers”––mentors with personal experience of the juvenile justice system––to guide at-risk youth toward positive change. Two evenings a week a team of mentors meet with youth for two hours of structured programming. JCCA’s program runs in two six-month cycles and serves 40 young adults annually.
Interactive Journaling
Arches uses interactive journaling, an evidence-based curriculum, to foster introspection and growth with the goal of reducing criminal behavior. The curriculum is age-appropriate and employs cognitive behavioral principles.
Credible Messengers
Arches mentors are recruited from the five boroughs and have a history with the criminal justice system. They are intimately familiar with the unique challenges facing at-risk youth and offer culturally-responsive guidance that respects the participant’s needs.
Incentives
The program offers non-monetary incentives to support retention and progress. These include fun and educational outings, one-on-one feedback and encouragement, self-esteem building, and graduation ceremonies for those who complete the program.
Other Community Resources
Arches participants have access to a variety of JCCA programs and partnerships in the Bronx:
- Substance abuse treatment
- Workforce development services
- Medical and dental health services
- Mental health care
- Homemaker services
- Recreational facilities
- Day care
- Legal services
- Educational services, including GED programs, transfer schools, and vocational training
- Domestic violence assistance
- Respite programs
- Emergency assistance
